  Historic Trains of California

Departure date: April 18, 2010

10 days, 14 meals

Double $3,037 per person

 

Experience rail travel at its finest aboard the Sierra Dinner Train, featuring delicious food and unspoiled scenery.  Journey on a splendidly restored 1915 Pullman train car as you travel through picturesque Napa Valley at an unhurried pace. Enjoy the Sacramento River Train as it meanders along the Sacramento River over the longest wooden trestle in the West.  Crisscross over the Noyo River and cut through the coastal mountains to towering redwood forests aboard the Skunk Train. You will also visit Railtown State Historic Park in Jamestown, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe Woodland and Sausalito.

 

Hotels for this trip include three nights in San Francisco – Marriott or Crowne Plaza; two nights in Sonora – Best Western Inn; three nights in Sacramento – Hyatt Regency; and one night in Fort Bragg – Emerald Dolphin Inn.

  San Francisco Getaway

 Departure date: June 7, 2010

Begin your trip to the “City by the Bay” – San Francisco - with a welcome dinner where you will meet your fellow travelers. The next morning, you can enjoy breakfast on Pier 39, San Francisco’s top attraction. You’ll experience an up-close view of the haul-out of harbor seals, postcard views of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, Alcatraz and San Francisco Bay. After breakfast, a local guide will take you on a sightseeing tour of the city. Highlights will include the Twin Peaks, Seal Rocks and the Golden Gate Bridge. In the afternoon, you will have some leisure time to explore the shops at Fisherman’s Wharf or Union Square or take a ride up and down the city’s thrilling hills on a famed cable car. 

 

On the third day, you will travel to the beautiful Sonoma Valley, one of the most famous wine-growing regions in the country. There you will enjoy a wine tasting and tour of the Viansa Winery and visit to the unique marketplace.

 

You will travel to Monterey the next day. This city is often called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky; home to the famed 17 Mile Drive, one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world. On this drive, you will pass through the Del Monte Forest and Pebble Beach Golf Course, then travel to Old Monterey, the place where California’s statehood began in 1849. You will have time to explore charming Old Monterey and shop at Cannery Row. Enjoy dinner in Monterey before your return to San Francisco and the end of your tour.

 

  A Day in St. Claude, MB

Departure date: June 15, 2010

Cost: MSOS members $59; non-members $65

Departure: 8:45 a.m. - Masonic Memorial Temple, 420 Corydon at Osborne

Registration: 8:15 a.m.

Return: Approx. 4:30 p.m.

This trip begins with a morning coffee break at Auberge Clemence in Elie's old convent. In St. Claude, plans include a visit to the local Roman Catholic church, famous for its architecture, the library, old jail and the world's largest pipe. Lunch includes a tour of the Parmalat Dairy Musuem and costume presentation. Deadline to book is June 1, 2010.

  Gardenton Ukrainian Festival

Departure date: Sunday, July 11, 2010

Cost: MSOS members $63; non-members $69

Departure:  Masonic Memorial Temple, 420 Corydon at Osborne

Registration: 8 a.m.; departure 8:30 a.m. sharp

Return: Approx. 5:30 p.m.

 

“Welcome to Manitoba 2010” – a special day in Gardenton to help celebrate their annual Ukrainian Festival with entertainment from Ukraine.

 

Our morning coffee stop will be in St. Pierre Jolys at the Sugar Shack. After our arrival at Gardenton Hall, we will have a homemade Ukrainian lunch (perogies, cabbage rolls, borsch, chicken, etc). At 1 p.m. we will be entertained with a stage show by performers from Ukraine. An optional tour(your cost $2) you may visit the Tall Grass Museum, an original one-room school built in 1907, a thatched roof house built in 1897, and the first Ukrainian Church in Canada. Our afternoon break includes an ice cream treat before our departure.

 

A minimum of 35 people is needed for this tour. Deadline to register is June 29. Payment to be made within 10 days of booking.

  Canyon Country

Departure date: September 23, 2010

9 days, 12 meals

Cost: Double: $3,339 per person

 

This tour of Canyon Country in Arizona and Utah features some of America’s most colourful and spectacular scenery with visits to three national parks. 

 

Your holiday begins in the historic city of Scottsdale, Arizona. During your second day you will tour downtown Phoenix, Camelback Mountain, Paradise Valley and Old Town Scottsdale, as well as watch Native American jewellery-making demonstrations. The third day begins with a visit to the beautiful city of Sedona with time to shop in the marketplace. Then it’s on to Oak Creek Canyon and spectacular Kaibab National Forest where you will reach the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

 

You will have ample time to explore the Grand Canyon the next morning. Later, a short drive will bring you to Cameron Trading Post, a haven for travelers, traders and explorers who come from all points of the globe to see the wonder of the Grand Canyon. You will continue north through mesa-studded desert scenery before arriving at your home for the next two evenings, Lake Powell Resort.

 

You will begin the next day with an invigorating breakfast cruise. Journey through the territory of the Navajo nation and arrive in Monument Valley, a sacred Navajo land featuring colourful sandstone spires that rise hundreds of feet from the valley floor. You will also visit Hogan, where Navajo history and symbolism are represented.

 

The next day, you will ravel to Bryce Canyon National Park, truly one of the most spectacular scenic wonders of the world, then on to your final destination for the day – the red and white sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park. In sheer magnitude and colour, this is one of the most awe-inspiring national parks in the world. You will climb aboard Zion’s open-air tram to truly experience spectacular scenery as you wind alongside the Virgin River through the 2,400-foot deep ½ mile wide Zion Canyon.

 

Later that day, you will leave nature’s beauty behind for the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas strip. Your two-night stay will provide you with plenty of time to enjoy the shows, casinos and all the fun that only Las Vegas offers.

GROUP PICK-UPS
Upon request we will attempt to arrange pick-up and drop-off service for ten or more people at locations of their choice.

SHARING POLICY
At your request, we will try to pair up single travelers of the same gender, qualifying you both for double occupancy price. Should one roommate cancel before the trip, the other person will be charged the SINGLE rate. MSOS is not responsible for any expenses incurred during the trip should roommates find they are unsuited and opt to make arrangements for single accommodation after commencement of the tour.

DEPOSITS
Day trips: Payment is due within 10 days of booking. For longer trips, deposit is due within 10 days of booking.

CANCELLATION AND / OR HEALTH INSURANCE
Health and Cancellation Insurance is the responsibility of the client and must be obtained within 48 hours of making a deposit on a tour. If insurance is not purchased within that time frame, it will be impossible to refund any monies if a client cancels the trip after making the deposit.

DAY TRIP REFUND POLICY
If cancellation is made up to 30 days prior to departure, a full refund is issued; 29 days or less, a $5 administration fee is charged. No refunds will be given if a trip is cancelled within 72 hours of departure.

BORDER CROSSINGS IDENTIFICATION
When crossing the border into the United States, a Canadian citizen must have PHOTO IDENTIFICATION. The best form of identification is a passport. Your passport has your picture, date of birth and all necessary information. Lacking that, you must have your birth certificate and another piece of government identification with your picture. This can be your drivers license, or the Liquor Control Commission identity card. Identification from the Liquor Control Commission is $17, please phone 284-2501 for further information.
